CALS Office of Sustainability Programs teaches Triangle business leaders about sustainability

As part of its Earth Day celebration, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Office of Sustainability Programs hosted a Leadership Triangle class on sustainable agriculture.

Representatives from local businesses and nonprofit organizations met with faculty experts and local entrepreneurs at Yates Mill Park on April 17 to discuss how sustainability efforts at the local level can make a difference globally.

Among the presenters were Courtney Tellefsen of The Produce Box, Ryan Finch with Raleigh City Farm, Robyn Stout and Teisha Wymore of The North Carolina 10% Campaign, Matt Kopac from Burt’s Bees and Dr. Danesha Seth Carley of the CALS Office of Sustainability Programs.

After lunch the group traveled from Yates Mill Park to the college’s Agroecology Education Farm, where farm manager Stephen Ratasky instructed participants on how to plant seedlings, lay drip hoses and turn the soil.

“We discussed how small solutions, such as local agriculture and food sources, vermiculture, and even backyard—or patio—planting can play a big role in sustainability efforts in our local communities and beyond,” said Seth Carley, director of the CALS Sustainability Office. “By hosting this event, we were able to open a dialogue among people who are connected to the pulse of the Triangle and to get them thinking about how to implement local solutions to global issues in sustainability.”

Leadership Triangle is a non-profit organization designed to educate and promote regionalism across the separate communities of the Triangle through regional and leadership development classes, seminars and awards.
